He’s Du Quoin’s most successful export, the one people point at and say, “I went to school with that guy,” and he carries himself with the calm confidence of someone who’s spent his entire adult life hearing, “You know, you’d make a great coach,” at the gas station.

Hill completed the full Saluki pilgrimage. Local kid, local athlete, briefly borrowed by Western Kentucky for basketball before the siren song of Carbondale pulled him back. He became the starting QB, logged an NFL cameo that technically counts, then snapped back to SIU like a boomerang made of Busch Light and loyalty. He’s the embodiment of the program he leads, never living more than 90 minutes from the stadium and still looking like he could give you 12 decent snaps in an emergency.

His ascent to the top job has a Josh Whitman air to it. Dale Lennon was the head coach at SIU for eight years and could not get momentum behind the program. Hill replaced the outgoing OC in 2014, a guy named Kalen DeBoer, and ran the offense for two seasons. When Lennon was fired, SIU didn’t need a national search. They needed the person who already knew every back road, every booster, and every metaphorical body buried under the bleachers. Hill rebuilt SIU with the stubborn patience of someone assembling furniture without instructions. It started slowly, took shape, showed real progress, and now looks ready for a teardown and rebuild. Hill is certain he can handle it himself, since he’s been his own OC for several seasons. Nick Hill is the prodigal son who left once, found his calling in football, and his forever home in Carbondale.

Offensive Style: Physical, balanced, QB‑driven spread offense.

Hill took over play‑calling in 2025 after longtime OC Blake Rolan left for Wisconsin, mostly so he could coach QB D.J. Williams with his own hands on the wheel. His scheme mixes Air Raid passing with a power‑spread run game. The goal is simple enough: make defenses account for the quarterback as a runner and force them to defend every inch of the field.

Southern Illinois calls plays like a former quarterback still convinced he could suit up tomorrow. The gap‑scheme runs let the Salukis control the line of scrimmage, and the passing game adds just enough tempo to make opponents react instead of dictate. Lee Pronschinske is the defensive coordinator for the Salukis and very much an up‑and‑comer. Southern Illinois plays an even‑front, base‑heavy defense that trusts its front four and a do‑everything linebacker group. The Salukis look a lot like Iowa, leaning on the front to survive the MVFC’s run‑first personality without dipping into nickel. This year’s group has already forced eight turnovers in three games, including four interceptions last week.

Coach Pron’s career arc is basically a heat map of small‑town upper‑Midwest football. He played at Winona State and built a résumé that would make Jerry Kill nod in approval. He has coached safeties, linebackers, and special teams, and Hill promoted him to DC in 2025. He’s still in his twenties and carries the energy of someone raised on weight rooms and energy drinks. His film sessions must feel like the work of a man obsessed with tackling efficiency, versatility, and discipline.
