From the Peoria Journal Star:

So the 6-foot-8, 220-pound high school junior - who committed to the Illinois basketball program last winter - cut down on his AAU season and made it a priority to build his body and his game.

By concentrating on the Adidas Nations program - a series of weekend development camps where improving skills and fundamentals comes before competition - the suburban St. Louis forward from Lafayette High School took a different approach in preparing for college.

“It’s physically impossible to do all the trips I planned,” he said. “I put together a calendar. I would have been home two weekends the whole summer. We made the Adidas Nations a priority. It’s a good experience. I get a lot of coaching there. The workouts are really beneficial.

“I’ve done AAU since I was a seventh-grader. I’ve been to all the major tournaments at least twice. The biggest need for my game right now is in the weight room or the gym working on my skills. I know where I’m going to college. I don’t have to impress anybody. (Illinois coach Bruce Weber) knows what I’m doing and how hard I’m working.”

From West Newsmagazine Sports:

Lafayette standout junior Tyler Griffey said his decision to choose the University of Illinois to play college basketball came down to the coaches and location.

“I chose Illinois for basically three reasons,” Griffey said. “Over the past two years, I have built a strong relationship with Coach (Jay) Price and Coach (Bruce) Weber, and I believe Coach Weber is one of the best coaches in the country. I wanted to stay close to home and it basically came down between Missouri and Illinois. Illinois has an incredible recruiting class with three guards committed in my class and two in the class below me. All those combined made Illinois stand out among the others.”

From the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

The recruitment of Tyler Griffey began before his freshman year at Lafayette High School and now, according to the Champaign News- Gazette through unnamed sources, the 6-foot-8 junior has committed to the University of Illinois.

An announcement from Griffey is expected this weekend. Sources close to Griffey would neither confirm nor deny his commitment to the Illini.

From Paul Klee and the News Gazette:

Add another one to the Illinois basketball program’s recruiting haul.

Tyler Griffey, a 6-foot-8 junior from Lafayette (Mo.) High School in the St. Louis area, gave the Illinois staff an oral commitment on Wednesday, multiple sources said late Wednesday. Griffey can sign a national letter of intent with the Illini in November.
