From the Lake-County News Sun:
Paul (9 points), playing for Richmond’s opponent on this day, also made his bones on the AAU circuit, where he was courted by Bruce Weber and the Illini.
This is Nickerson’s second year playing AAU, and he’s come to like it even better than playing high-school ball.
“It’s way more physical and aggressive,” said the Waukegan junior, who came on strong for the Bulldogs in the second half of the year. “Players are way more hungry because it’s more of a showcase for college scouts. And the competition’s better. It makes it more challenging.”

From Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting:
Team NLP is in the Elite Eight because they are a great team anchored by a very good player in Illinois bound Brandon Paul. The 6-foot-3 guard is a slasher supreme and did all of his damage at the rim with some athletic plays.
He got to the basket any time he wanted to. Paul’s first step to the basket has been tough to defend and his confidence is growing by the game. He put in 26 points on Indiana Elite in the first round of the tournament.

From the Orange & Blue News:
Illinois landed the 6-foot-3 guard early because they loved his scoring touch and athleticism. That was clearly on display over the weekend. He enjoyed a strong weekend of play thanks in large part to his team’s overall fundamentals and unselfishness.
Paul did most of his work at the rim as a slasher and his first step allowed him to get to the basket with little trouble. His perimeter touch didn’t get a chance to be seen only because of his success with slashing.
Kingwood: Day One

From Orange & Blue News:
Not only is Illinois getting an elite talent in Richmond, Brandon Paul will also offer instant help when he gets on campus. The 2009 prospect plays almost like a carbon copy of Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks. A strong athlete, Paul loves to attack the rim in the open court and is productive in the lane in the half court. His shot doesn’t look great, but he has the feel of being a capable, but streaky long distant shooter.

Why Brandon Paul Is #1 In 2009
February 14, 2008
From the Chicago Sun Times:
The biggest reason why we tab Paul as the #1 junior in Illinois is because he has a considerably higher degree of versatility than any of the other top guards in the class, including Peoria Central’s D.J. Richardson, Sterling’s Joe Bertrand and Whitney Young’s Chris Colvin. Simply put, Paul is the most well-rounded offensively of any of these players. Not only is Paul an outstanding long-range shooter, but he is also highly athletic, is an outstanding passer and has above-average ballhandling skills which allow him to consistently beat opponents to the basket in one-on-one situations.
Secondly, and a factor that we believe is just as important, is the intangibles that Paul brings to the table. He plays as hard from start to finish as any player in the junior class and never takes a play off. The same cannot be said about either Richardson or Bertrand despite their enormous skill level. Paul’s outstanding work ethic is especially noticeable at the defensive end, as he uses his incredibly long wingspan to get into the passing lanes and convert baskets off of turnovers. And the best part part is that he believes there are still things that he can improve on and he works every day on trying to become even better. You have to love a kid who thinks that way.

Warren struggled in going 1-2 this week, but Paul still had some fine performances. In a loss to Libertyville, Paul scored 25 points, including 13 in the final few minutes in a furious comeback attempt. Against Mundelein, he was held to six points as he shot 2-of-11 from the field in a loss. Paul came back the next game and guided the Blue Devils to a win over Lake Zurich. Warren will look to bounce back with a game against Lake Forest on Friday.
