Update from the King James
April 29, 2008
From the Chicago Sun Times:
According to Schmidt, both Head and Waukegan’s Jereme Richmond are likely to wind up in the national top ten when rankings are released this summer, which is a first for the state of Illinois. Not even the 1998 class, with Frank Williams, Corey Mageette, Quentin Richardson and Bobby Simmons could boast two top ten players.
“It’s the next great class in state history, there is no doubt about that,” Schmidt said. “There is depth at every position.”
Illinois fans will be please to hear that Richmond’s recent stints of disgruntled on-court demeanor seem to have passed.
“Richmond carried himself very well,” Schmidt said. “He’s a totally different player in the AAU setting as opposed to the high school setting. At this point I’m not sure why that is.”
Big Ten fights postseason changes
April 29, 2008

Jim Delany will arrive in Miami for the BCS meetings without devil horns. He also will leave the Grim Reaper costume back at Big Ten headquarters.
Delany, frankly, is annoyed the pro-playoff college football crowd has labeled him and Pac-10 counterpart Tom Hansen “the axis of obstruction.”
The Big Ten commissioner doesn’t see it that way, and that’s a point he’s likely to express Monday and Tuesday when he meets with his fellow power brokers.
He says he’s simply trying to “protect and enhance” the sport while also protecting the interests of his beloved Big Ten.

Kingwood: Day One
April 22, 2008
From Orange & Blue News:
Not only is Illinois getting an elite talent in Richmond, Brandon Paul will also offer instant help when he gets on campus. The 2009 prospect plays almost like a carbon copy of Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks. A strong athlete, Paul loves to attack the rim in the open court and is productive in the lane in the half court. His shot doesn’t look great, but he has the feel of being a capable, but streaky long distant shooter.
Kingwood: Day One
April 22, 2008
From Orange & Blue News:
The Rising Stars’ top prospect Jereme Richmond had moments of brilliance but couldn’t put together a dominating performance. Most of his buckets came off pull up jumpers off a ball screen. Finishing with eight points, Richmond is, nonetheless, one of the elite talents in the class of 2010.
Kingwood: DJ Richardson Update
April 22, 2008
From Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting:
Illinois bound wing D.J. Richardson has a pretty-looking jumper. The 6-foot-4 guard has a good, quick release and can really get the ball out of his hands in a hurry.
Kingwood: Illinois Commit Head Impresses
April 22, 2008
From Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting:
The Kingwood Classic has its share of impressive prospects, but none have been as impressing as future five-star 2010 prospect Crandall Head.A high level athlete with a strong physique as well, Head often operates at a different level than other players on the court. His ability to get to the ball and operate in traffic standout along with the multiple ways he can score. Head played all three perimeter positions for the Mac Irving Fire, and he looked comfortable in every situation. Throw in his high basketball IQ, and it’s almost scary to think about how good he and fellow Illinois commitment Jereme Richmond could be in the same backcourt.
As good as his brother Luther Head is, it’s hard to imagine that as a sophomore he looked as good as Crandall looks at this point. When Rivals.com revisits the 2010 rankings, Head’s name will be one of the first names discussed.
Mendenhall loves Bears, ready for anything in NFL Draft
April 22, 2008
It was just one of several trips to meet with teams that Rashard Mendenhall has made in preparation for Saturday’s NFL draft.
He didn’t have to pass through O’Hare to visit Halas Hall, and he knows the chances are slim that he’ll wind up a Bear. Still …
“I think it went real well, honestly, just being there, it felt like home,” he said. “It isn’t home, but it felt like that. I have all the respect in the world for coach Lovie Smith. One of the best guys I’ve ever met, real honest guy, a spiritual guy.”
